In 2024, there were 107,000 children in care in the UK.
The majority of children are in care due to having suffered abuse or neglect.

The rest of those children may have relatives to stay with, or otherwise, they're placed in residential care homes.

Around 14% of children in residential children's homes are formally criminalized,
That compares to 4% of children in other care placements like fostering. For the general population it's 1%.

Since 2011 the number of children in residential care homes has doubled.
Tragically children that have left care make up 7% of the deaths of young people aged 18-21 despite only comprising 1% of the population for this age group.
