Today, thousands of young people across the UK receive their GCSE results 2025. For many, this is a day of excitement and relief, but for some it can bring disappointment or pressure. At Blue Sky Fostering, we know that for children and young people in foster care, exam results are only one part of their story. While GCSEs open doors to future education and careers, it’s equally important to celebrate personal growth, resilience, and achievements that can’t be measured by grades alone.
Exams provide a snapshot of academic ability, but they don’t show the challenges many foster children have overcome. Frequent school moves, disrupted education, or the impact of early trauma can make the journey to sitting GCSEs incredibly tough. Simply attending school consistently, sitting exams despite anxiety, or showing determination in the face of difficulties are all powerful achievements that don’t appear on a results slip.
It these types of personal victories that provide celebration, just as much - if not more than - academic success. For some foster children, this might mean improving attendance, developing a new hobby or skill, or building positive friendships. For others, it’s about finding the courage to face challenges head-on, such as during our Duke of Edinburgh award, or Devon & Cornwall Expedition. Recognising these achievements not only builds self-esteem but also sends a clear message: success isn’t defined by exam grades alone.
One in four young people now struggle with a mental health condition.
Perhaps real success can be measured by their creativity, kindness, and resilience rather than their exam results. At Blue Sky, we help young people develop a strong sense of identity and confidence, qualities that will carry them into adulthood and help them thrive beyond education.
Education is about far more than grades. Employers, colleges, and training providers value skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving - qualities often developed outside the classroom. GCSE results are one stepping stone, but there are many different routes to success, and every path deserves celebration. At Blue Sky Fostering, we believe in preparing young people for life, not just for exams.
To all young people receiving their GCSE results in 2025: whether you achieved the grades you hoped for or not, your efforts, resilience, and personal growth are achievements in their own right. You are more than your exam results, and your future is full of possibility. Let's celebrate the whole child, beyond numbers on a page.
