Common Questions

There is no upper age limit, age is just a number when it comes to fostering. We need people who have life experiences with the children in your care. You must be at least 21 years old to start fostering.

Yes! You can foster if you have pets. Most of our foster carers have pets of some sort. Caring for pets tends to go hand in hand with the caring nature of foster carers. Once you've taken your first steps towards a career as a foster carer, we will begin the fostering assessment process, and your pets are an important part of this process. Importantly, over and over again, we have seen the way children coming into care find it less daunting to make friends with your pets before they make friends with you! In addition, your pets can be instrumental in helping a child or young person settle in your home.

Yes. We have many single foster carers who have a solid support network of family and friends who offer practical and emotional support when needed. The Nexus Fostering team is also always available to support you, so you will never feel alone when you foster with us.

This depends on the area you live in. If you are in a very rural area this could cause a problem but if you live in a city, driving might not be necessary.

It depends on the criminal record. If it was something like stealing a car and it was some time ago, you could now be an excellent role model. Don’t let a criminal record put you off speaking to us as you may have lots to offer a young person.

How much does fostering pay is one of our most frequently asked questions! Once you are approved as a foster carer and allocated your first placement, an allowance will be calculated based on your experience and the circumstances of the child/children placed with you.

Fostering a child or young person is unique each time – allowances also differ to reflect this. Our knowledgeable team will be happy to run through this with you. If you would like to book a call back click here.

"Children are looked after by foster carers who are caring, encouraging and compassionate. Children are treated as part of the family and made to feel included. The excellent relationship between all caring for the children means they make good progress. Professionals are consistent in their views of carers, and words such as 'nurturing', 'aspirational' and 'excellent advocates' were used to describe the care they provide to children."
